Breathing spirals

For some reason spirals have been an obsession of mine for a while now. I love the way they curve and are always different. Some are functional, some merely aesthetic. I’v experimented a lot with different types of spirals, different shapes and materials to see the effect. In the back of my mind i was playing with the idea to create a dynamic “breathing” object.

The steel experiment was mostly a sidetrack in order to discover the different behaviour of steel spirals versus wooden ones. For this project I decided to stick with wood, as it is much more ‘springy’ in this spiral shape and bounces back easier.

I lasercut 2 spirals which I connected around a sphere. I then connected the top and bottom to servo engines to give them movement. The dynamic aspect of this project was very important to me and makes it so much more interesting in my opinion. I love the fact that there is something happening and moving around and definitely want to explore the area of dynamic (light) installations further.
